John Edmiston paints during short periods of deep-trance altered consciousness. The Florence presentation will bring together approximately twenty small-scale works as a concentrated encounter with his practice. It will also provide fantastic opportunities to participate in a cultural event that is at the heart of the arts. Florence is unique in its links to the Renaissance and remains one of the main centres of art and culture in Europe. This exhibition will bring spiritual art to a wider international audience, creating a truly seminal space.

The Project

“In new and unique paintings, John Edmiston expands the boundaries of Outsider Art to encompass the imagery of the spiritual. Notions of memory and eternity are conveyed by way of totemic avatars, allowing the viewer to participate in the artist’s own acts of contemplation and enlightenment. Emerging from trance by way of automatic processes, these apparitions, guides and spiritual entities represent a deep connection with an unconscious teeming with significations of otherness and self. Edmiston’s images recall the panoply of mystic deities familiar from eastern mysticism and meditative practices.”
