John Edmiston is a self-taught visionary artist based in London who paints during deep-trance altered states. Working quickly and without a predetermined composition, he uses automatic processes to allow figures, presences and forms to emerge through paint. He views each finished work as a surviving fragment of an encounter, a physical trace of an inner vision. Edmiston’s work is held in private collections, the Permanent Collection of The College of Psychic Studies in London and the Collection of Mediumistic Art in Munich. He is represented by the Henry Boxer Gallery, London.Make a press enquiry

John Edmiston is a self-taught visionary artist who paints in a deep-trance altered state.
As a child, Edmiston saw shapes and apparitions that either calmed or frightened him. He has since learned how to enter deep meditative trance and return to these inner worlds. His trance states usually last between two and three hours. He therefore works quickly, instinctively and on a small scale. Without preliminary drawings or a predetermined composition, he uses automatic processes to initiate each painting and allows its forms to emerge through colour and value. Edmiston considers the resulting works to be footprints of encounters: surviving fragments, physical traces of inner visions and remnants of experiences that cannot otherwise be retained. His work is represented in private collections, the Permanent Collection of The College of Psychic Studies in London and the Collection of Mediumistic Art in Munich. He is represented by the Henry Boxer Gallery, London.Editorial materials are available on request.
